Drug bust on first day of school

Posted

VALLEY SPRINGS — According to an affidavit filed in Boone County Circuit Court on Monday, Sgt. Dusty Morgan of the Boone County Sheriff’s Department was patrolling the Valley Springs school zone on Aug. 14 when he initiated a traffic stop which led to a drug bust. Law enforcement was monitoring the area, ensuring the safety of children as they made their way to school for the first day of the school year.
Morgan reported that he observed through his front facing radar that a vehicle was driving 40 mph in a 25 mph zone, with children present. The Valley Springs Fire Department had their fire engines placed on the side of the highway with emergency lights activated and had signs stating “slow” before the 25 mph. Many precautions were taken to warn drivers of the need to drive safely at the start of the new school year.
Morgan initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle and made contact with the driver — identified as Jared Galemore. Galemore provided the officer with a Missouri ID and an unsigned title for the vehicle, stating that his proof of insurance was on his phone but could not be accessed. Galemore’s passenger in the vehicle was identified as Cheyanne Davis.
While the dispatch was running the vehicle occupants’ information to determine if they had valid drivers licenses, Morgan asked the driver for consent to search the vehicle. Galemore declined to allow the search, so Morgan requested that he roll up his windows so that he could deploy his K9 - Roxy. The K9 demonstrated interest in the passenger side of the vehicle, indicating the presence of narcotics.
Morgan then had the occupants exit the vehicle so that he could search it, with probable cause. During the search, he discovered numerous syringe style needles and a glass smoking device on the floorboard of the passenger side of the vehicle. Davis was placed under arrest and at that time, Cpl. Hemphill was also on the scene and observed Davis’ pants were undone.
