The annual Newton County Clean-Up is being held during the month of April. This year, abandoned automobiles will be picked up free of charge.
This project of the Newton County Beautification Committee and the Newton County Chamber of Commerce includes involvement by schools in the county. Students are urged to enter an essay contest: "How can my school help make America litter free? The writer of the winning 200-word essay will receive $100.
A trophy will be given to the school and community that picks up the most litter. Bags have been distributed to Newton County schools. The individual who picks up the most litter will be awarded a plaque.
The automobile pick up will be by Gaither Mountain Towing. Proceeds from the sale of the scrapped vehicles will go to Arkansas Children's Hospital. To make arrangements, contact the towing company at 870-577-4545 or the Newton County Beautification Committee representative Katherine Nance, either 870-446-2373 or 870-715-0339.
