Jasper boys, Kingston girls crowned district champs

JASPER — The Pirate's Cove was packed on Saturday for the finals of the 1A-1East District Tournament.

When the night was over, the Jasper boys defeated Omaha, 62-49, while the Kingston girls were victorious over Jasper, 58-55, in overtime.

Senior Boys

Jasper used a solid second period to take the lead on the way to downing Omaha, 62-49, for the championship hardware.

Omaha held a 13-11 lead after the first period. Eagle Noah Morrison had six points and four rebounds to lead the No. 3 seed to the two-point advantage.

Jasper's offense came alive in the second.

Blake Williams knocked down two treys for six points and Spencer Traywick had six as well. Malijah Campbell added five for the Pirates as they moved ahead, 30-24, at halftime.

Scoring started slowly in the second half. Four different Eagles scored, but each only netted two points in third period.

Omaha' Briar Whitehurst had eight points for the Eagles and Dylan Greenwood added five.

Jasper's Sawyer Willis had 11 points in the last frame and Blake Williams added seven.

Jasper was 11-of-12 from the free throw line in the fourth period to seal the win.

Willis led the Pirates with 18 points. Williams netted 15, Traywick 14, Campbell 11 and Ty Wiiliams four.

Traywick had 10 rebounds.

Omaha was led by Greenwood with 16 points. Morrison added 14, Whitehurst 12, Sam Edwards four and Jonathan McKinney three.

Morrison had nine rebounds.

Senior Girls

The Kingston senior girls came from behind in the fourth quarter to earn a district title, 58-55, in overtime.

Kingston didn't make a field goal in the extra period. However, Rilee Pittman hit four free throws and Lila Hartness added one for Kingston to account for the five points in overtime.

Jasper’s lone points came from Tiana Siebert on a shot inside the arc.

The Lady Pirates led, 11-6, at the first stop and 22-19 at halftime.

Kingston scored 14 points in the third period and 20 in the fourth frame to force overtime.

In the big Lady Yellow Jackets fourth, Paige Randall hit two 3-pointers and two field goals to account for half of her team’s points.

Jasper increased its lead in the third period to 39-33 with a quarter left to play.

Randall was Kingston’s top scorer with 19 points. Callie Edgmon added 18, Lila Hartman nine, Pittman seven and Emma Kivell four.

Laney Daniels led Jasper with 21 points. Siebert added 12, Jadeyn Middleton eight, Maggie Thomas and Camber Shrum five each and Willa Young four.
