MONTICELLO — The Arkansas Tech baseball team rallied in the ninth inning and had the potential game-tying and go-head runs on base, but ultimately fell short in the series finale, 3-2, at Arkansas-Monticello on Saturday afternoon in a low-scoring affair.
That ninth inning rally by the Wonder Boys (9-6, 7-2 GAC) started with two outs as Kandon Bennet worked an eight-pitch walk. Matt Robbins then singled through the left side to chase Bennet to third. Evan Hafley followed with a single through the left side as well to score Bennett and make it a 3-2 game.
With the potential game-tying run now in scoring position and the potential go-head run at first for the Wonder Boys, the Boll Weevils (4-6, 4-5 GAC) turned to the bullpen for Jared Roberts. Roberts would not waste much time in putting the finishing touches on the game as the Boll Weevils salvaged a game in the series.
Prior to the late-inning drama, the Wonder Boys had rallied in the top of the fifth to tie the game at 1-all. In that inning Drew Bailey led off with a double down the right field line. Elijah Boyer then moved Bailey to third on a sacrifice bunt. Bennet followed with a walk to put runners at the corners with one out. Robbins then drove in the game-tying run on a RBI groundout to the UAM pitcher.
