Jasper bows out in first round of state

HARRISON — Jasper could not stop the train.
Wednesday afternoon, the Lady Pirates faced Mammoth Spring in the first round of the Class 1A State Basketball Tournament.
When the night was over, Mammoth Spring advanced to the next round with a 79-38 win over the Lady Pirates.
Mammoth Spring is the defending state champion in Class 1A.
The Lady Bears set the tone early.
In the first 90 seconds of action, the Lady Bears scored six points with two of those coming off of an offensive rebound.
Tiana Siebert got the Lady Pirates on the board with a shot in the paint with 4:46 left in the first period.
Then the bottom dropped out for Jasper.
Mammoth Spring scored the next 22 points over a 3:24 period. Most of the points came off of layups and the team dropped two treys during the stretch.
Laney Daniels ended the Mammoth run for Jasper with a 3-pointer with 41 seconds.
The Lady Bears added three more points to its total and Daniels hit a trey at the buzzer to set the score at 31-8.
Maggie Thomas started the second frame with a trey for the Lady Pirates. Willa Young and Siebert each scored a bucket in the second period.
Jasper trailed at halftime, 53-15.
In the third period, Jasper scored 12 points. Siebert and Daniels scored six each to account for the total.
The Lady Pirates trailed, 71-27, with a period left to play.
Daniels had 12 points for Jasper. Siebert added 10, Camber Shrum eight, Thomas and Jadeyn Middleton three each and Young two.
