It has been many years since I wrote the items for the Compton community. Several folks have asked recently if I would begin writing again, as the community needs a way to announce events that are happening and to be able to keep up with friends and neighbors.
Many things have happened with the Compton Volunteer Fire Department in the last year or so. We have a new fire station on Highway 43 South on the same grounds as the original fire station. Through the efforts of our Fire Chief, Garland Matlock, and our board members, we were able to secure a grant to pay for part of the new station. Membership dues and the ACT 833 grant that I write for the department each year were also helpful in paying for the new station. We are happy with the new station and our equipment, which is the best we have had in years. The volunteer fire department is looking for volunteers to become fire fighters and first responders for our community. If you would like information about joining the fire department, please contact Chief Garland Matlock at 870-204-1845. The next Fire Association meeting will be Monday, September 9, at 6:30 p.m. at the County Line Baptist Church.
The Compton Community Association reorganized this past week. The President of the Association is Darlene Cullen; Vice-President is Karen Clark Fancher; Secretary/Treasurer is Latisha Cook; Directors are Christine Blackshear, Jeri Holder, Paulette Scroggins Jech, and Billy Eastep. The old buildings are in need of repair, and more information will be forthcoming as far as fundraisers, etc. to help with the upkeep. As of now, there is a quilt raffle going on. A Flower Garden quilt donated by Betty Gabbert will be raffled off on November 2. The quilt top was made by Erma Clark Christian and hand-quilted by the Hill Top Ladies Auxiliary in 2007. The quilt has never been used. Tickets are $5 each or 5 tickets for $20. You may contact any of the board members to purchase tickets or make donations to the Compton Community Association.

Thanks to those who have continued to save Best Choice Labels for the fire department. You may send them to PO Box 845, Compton, Arkansas 72624, or contact Fire Chief Garland Matlock or myself. We will be glad to pick them up.
Get well wishes to long time resident Shirley Sims. We wish her a speedy recovery.
