Worley’s now taking waste tires

Posted

Steven Kershaw, Ozark Mountain Solid Waste District executive director, said Worley’s Tire on East Stephenson in Harrison is now the new depository for waste tires in Boone County.
The Arkansas Department of Energy and Environment’s Division of Environmental Quality, or DEQ (formerly known as ADEQ), approved the permit for Worley’s to collect waste tires in late December.
However, management at Worley’s said they were building a fenced area to hold tires and keep people from dumping tires without documentation. So, the depository at Hudson Tire and Battery had been used to collect tires.

Kershaw said Worley’s is now ready to accept waste tires from local tire businesses. Those businesses have documentation that shows how many tires they are dumping and the amount that was collected — customers pay a $3 fee per tire replaced and DEQ reimburses the waste district for tires picked up.
Hudson Tire and Battery also gave up its license to collect tires. Workers from Davis Rubber of Little Rock, the company contracted with the district to haul away and recycle used tires, were at Hudson on Thursday to clean up what tires were left. They said they would have to make one more trip to Hudson for the last of those tires.
Kershaw said individuals who have tires to dispose of will be charged $3 per tire unless they have proof that the $3 fee has already been paid.
