WHEREAS: James “Jimmy” Earl Carter Jr., the 39th President of the United States, was born on October 1, 1924, in Plains, Georgia to Earl and Lillian Carter;
WHEREAS: Carter went on to study at Georgia Southwestern College and the Georgia Institute of Technology. In 1946, he earned a B.S. degree from the United States Naval Academy and married his wife, Rosalynn Smith;
WHEREAS: Carter concluded his Naval career in 1953 and took over his family’s peanut farm in Plains, Georgia. He kicked off his career in politics by winning a Georgia Senate seat and then serving as the 76th Governor of Georgia, championing racially inclusive policies in a state that had previously been defined by Jim Crow divisions;
WHEREAS: Carter was elected President of the United States in 1976 and during his term, worked to solve international conflicts abroad and alleviate economic distress at home;
WHEREAS: After leaving office, President Carter helped define the modern American post-presidency by putting his faith front and center and helping people around the world through his volunteer work alongside his wife;
