Home extension groups share at Tri-County meet

The Newton County Cooperative Extension office hosted a Tri- County EHC meeting on Friday, Jan. 31. Twenty-one Extension Homemakers from Newton, Carroll and Boone County enjoyed food, fun and an information exchange.
The keynote speaker was Jack Boles, Newton County Farm Bureau President who shared a wealth of knowledge advocating for food security, small and local farming as well as, along with his wife, works to promote peaceful communities through art and education through their organization The Dove’s Next Project.
Julie Campbell who currently serves on the state board for the Farm Bureau Women’s Committee showcased ways to become involved in our community to assist with food security efforts. This week is Farm Bureau Week in our state and our local FB office is again participating in the annual “feed the feeder” initiative and is accepting non -perishable food items to provide to our school’s backpack program.
Newton County’s Family Consumer Science Agent, Joei Phillips spoke to the group about the importance of talking about/addressing Mental Health issues.
Ashley Edgmon, from Boone County Extension, addressed 52 Ways to climatize your finances and Emergency Financial Planning.
Torrie Smith, of the Carrol County Extension, spoke about ways to shop on a budget, stock your pantry on a budget and avoiding wasting food at home.

Each Newton County Extension group shared their clubs’ accomplishments and goals for the future.
The Scrappy Quilters shared the love of quilting and proudly displayed quilts made for cancer patients, nonprofit groups like Children’s Hospital, disaster victims, Veterans and supported 4H youth expenses. They volunteer at the fair and plan to continue offering basic or advanced quilting workshops.
The Deer Ladybugs shared a wonderful map activity of our county and the “must see” hidden gems. The Smith Mountain group, Penny Taylor, demonstrated and shared visuals for chair yoga moves, and finally the Jasper Pioneers ended our day with peacefulness and tranquility by sharing two poem readings by Ms. Terry Edwards.
The ladies enjoyed door prizes, button party favors, endured icebreakers and finished the day up with group photos.
The Tri-County meetings are scheduled three times a year with each county taking a turn to host.
