I want to write a big thank you to the officials of Jasper for the respectful, compassionate way they treated the people of Newton County in the peaceful protest on the Square last Friday. We were there and were impressed by the friendly attitudes, protection and treatment from Mayor Jan Larson, Chief Mike Henderson and officers, Sheriff Glen Wheeler and deputies, and all present. We were about 45 citizens raising our support for fair treatment of people of color and against racism in this great country. We held up signs, sang songs and had a good event exercising our free speech. The group knelt in silence for 8 minutes in remembrance of George Floyd. We were escorted to the Square and back and protected from any trouble. We sincerely thank the mayor and law enforcement officers of Jasper and Newton County for the professional, respectful job they did. It’s one more reason we are happy to live here. We hope and pray that others around this country receive the same fair, respectful treatment we do here, and hope one day racism ends for good. We will keep working on it, together.
