Gregory Ronald Smothers, 71, of Western Grove, died on Wednesday, May 8 (2019). Visitation is scheduled for Sunday, May 12, from 5-7 p.m. at Holt Memorial Chapel in Harrison. A Celebration of Life will be Monday, May 13, at 2 p.m. at Holt Memorial Chapel. Jeff Cope and Wesley Gladden will officiate.

He was born on Aug, 1, 1947, the son of the late Duell and Doris (Madge) Smothers.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Judith; and a son-in-law, Rick Slape.

He is survived by his wife, Janie (Gladden) Smothers, of Western Grove; a brother, Roger Smothers, of Harrison; a sister, Betty (Smothers) Bing, of Harrison; four children, Jill (Smothers) and LeeLee Holt, of Harrison, Erin (Smothers) and JP Melton, of Flower Mound, Texas, Polly (Garner) Slape, of Harrison, and Anthony and Kristi Garner, of Western Grove; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends.

Greg graduated Harrison High School in 1965 and attended Arkansas Tech University. He was a loan officer and vice president at Security Bank for 30 years. He was a member of the Boone Masonic Lodge #314 in Harrison and was a proficient Master Mason by the age of 21. Through the years, he was instrumental in organizing the North Arkansas Bird Hunters Association, and the first gaited horse shows in this area. He also served on the Boone and Newton County Fair Boards, and was involved in the first youth soccer teams in Harrison.
