The Jasper City Council met Thursday, July 16, at City Hall.
Several matters were discussed, the first being the recording of meetings. Meetings will be recorded and made available for citizens to review online in the upcoming months.
No citizens attended for commentary for the July meeting.
The committtee reviewed the need for guidelines for those wanting to open overnight rentals in the area. A packet containing rules and guidelines has been completed and can be attained by property owners by contacting City Hall.
A bid by H and D Concrete of Harrison to address the drainage issue on Clark Street.
A new police department policy will soon be posted online. The policy addresses the following issues:
A ban on chokeholds
Descalation of situations before using force
Warning by officers before shooting
Interventions by officers should another law enforcement officer show erraidical behavior
Using firearms as a last resort
A ban on shooting at moving vehicles
Officer Jayson Poole has been promoted to Corporal. A ceremony to celebrate his promotion will be held at a later date.
The Jasper High School has scheduled a graduation ceremony for Aug. 17. Social distancing will be crucial and visitors will be limited. Each student has been given 12 tickets to invite guests. Otherwise, the ceremony will be closed to the public.
The 2020 Census has been completed by the nursing home and jail. The city is working with the census bureau to get all citizens counted.
