Excerpts from the Newton County Times
Most church services — that is traditional Sunday go to meetings — have been suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic. For many the weekly time of worship and social gathering is being greatly missed. News from various religious dominations in Newton County once dominated community news. We share some of the accounts that appeared on the "Churches" column of the Newton County Times' Aug. 7, 1953, edition
Rev. Tom Wright, former pastor of the Cassville Baptist Church who now lives in Texas, reached last Sunday morning at an earlier worship hour at the Parthenon Baptist Church, then preached at the 11 o'clock preaching service in Jasper at the Baptist Church.
Rev. Wayne D. Gunther will compel the two weeks revival meeting which he has been holding at the Walnut Grove Baptist Church at Boxley this week, and will begin a revival meeting at the Parthenon Baptist Church the next day, Sunday, Aug. 9. Everyone is cordially invited to attend the two weeks service in the Parthenon church.
