Arkansas Tourism and The University of Arkansas are partnering to launch Arkansas Soul, a new summer media program for minority high school students. On June 16-30, a free two-week residential program will bring 10 students to the Fayetteville campus to participate in interactive college workshops at the School of Journalism and Strategic Media. Over the course of the program, the students will travel to multiple Arkansas cities to explore cultural landmarks, entertainment venues and tourist attractions. They will record their experiences by producing content and digital stories for a travel microsite promoted by Arkansas Tourism.
The selected students for the Arkansas Soul program will receive one-on-one instruction from university professors and media professionals. Minorities make up only 23 percent of the newsroom workforce, according to Pew Research. The necessity of getting more people of color involved in journalism is imperative to make newsrooms and boardrooms more diverse and inclusive, according to marketing agency Culturally Connected Communications.
