Airport upgrades see progress, new grant helps out

The Boone County Regional Airport board met Tuesday. The board discussed progress on the new terminal, T-hangar, and runway, as well as a shot-in-the-dark grant.

The T-hangar is set to receive its certificate of occupancy at any time, with the last of the paving expected to be completed today. Airport Manager Judy McCutcheon reported that she has had no problems filling the ten new bays created by the hangar with rent-paying airplane boarders.

The runway continues to await its final touchups before receiving the official blessing of the FAA. While the runway is fully operational, the airport is awaiting the contractor’s return to conduct spot repairs, expected in August.

The future terminal continues its vertical climb as the steel framework is installed. Additionally, interior furniture has been selected. Those choices will be rendered into representative art to allow the board to finalize approval of their decisions. The new terminal is still expected to be completed sometime in the spring of next year.

Described as having a low chance, the airport applied for and was selected for a $378,000 grant to construct a new parking lot adjacent to the new terminal. Partial funding for the proposed parking lot was planned through an annual airport improvement fund. The new grant will alleviate that fund for other purposes.
