Western Grove Elementary engages in statewide literary celebration

Posted

WESTERN GROVE – From March 4-14, Western Grove Elementary transformed into a hub of literary excitement as students participated in the statewide "Arkansas Reads One Book" program, culminating in a spirited "Lemonade War" inspired by the chosen title, "The Lemonade War" by Jacqueline Davies.
The program, designed to foster a shared reading experience across the state, encouraged students to delve into the book’s themes through classroom discussions, creative projects and interactive activities.
The highlight of the program was undoubtedly the culminating "Lemonade War." Students, channeling their inner entrepreneurs, participated in a school-wide competition, creating their own lemonade stands and putting their knowledge to the test. The atmosphere was charged with friendly rivalry as students showcased their creativity in stand design, marketing strategies, and of course, their lemonade recipes. The Kindergarten class was the book review winner; 1st grade, customer service award; 2nd grade, finance gurus; 3rd grade, best booth, 4th grade, best lemonade and 5th grade was the attendance winner, and 5th grade was the judges’ choice for overall winner.
The "Lemonade War" wasn’t just about selling lemonade. It was an opportunity for students to apply the lessons learned from the book in a fun and engaging way. They practiced their sales pitches, calculated their profits and learned the value of customer service. The event brought the story to life, allowing students to experience the challenges and rewards of running a business firsthand.
"The 'Arkansas Reads One Book' program and the 'Lemonade War' were a tremendous success," said a Western Grove Elementary teacher. "It was wonderful to see the students so engaged with the book and to witness their creativity and teamwork during the competition. This experience has not only fostered a love of reading, but has also provided valuable life lessons that will stay with them for years to come."
