Watch out for Fuzzy Catfish

Posted

Winter is a quiet time for ponds in Arkansas. Low temps keep our warm water fish species lethargic. Their immune system also slows down during this time.
One common disease is called winter fungus and hits catfish pretty hard. The fungus that causes this condition presents as pale grey to white fuzzy cotton-like textures on the skin and scales of fish. Sometimes fish with this condition will be aimlessly wandering near the water’s surface.
Most ponds that have issues with this condition have a low PH and water hardness levels. There are no practical whole-pond treatments that can stop these infections. The best approach to prevent this disease is to maintain good water
quality, and do not over-stock.
During the month of February watch out for fresh fish kills, especially in older or weaker fish. A few mortalities are no cause for alarm, but dozens of dead fish is cause for concern.
Document the fish species and the amount of mortality and we can take corrective measures to prepare a treatment and restocking plan in the spring. As far as pond management is concerned, now is the time to adjust water chemistry if needed.
Fertilization, feeding and any herbicide applications should be suspended until spring. Aquatic dye can be applied for weed control, but it will need more frequent booster doses during the wet season to maintain effective shading.
