Posted

The March luncheon of Boone and Newton Counties Retired Teachers and Support Staff (BNCRTSS) was Tuesday the 7th at Western Sizzlin’ in Harrison. Following fellowship and food, President Charles Adair welcomed everyone and introduced guest speaker, Julianna Hamblin, the Harrison High School Theatre teacher and Ozarks Arts Council (OAC) Executive Director. Hamblin grew up with a love for theatre performing in OAC dramas from an early age and shared OAC updates and upcoming events, a Celtic harpist, North Arkansas College drama play, and how new generations are becoming more involved in helping with OAC.
Before introducing her students, Hamblin shared how the HHS Theatre is thriving with many awards of excellence in the premier honor society, International Thespian Society, the International festival in Russellville, receiving the highest Gold honors troop to name a few awards. During March they celebrate Thespian month with numerous activities including a schoolwide Theatre Workshop and a fundraiser.
Playing HHS theatre students Isaiah Wallis, Mark Green, Brinkley Brewer, and Emma Bock performed a hilarious act from their upcoming humorous play, “The Election” which will be performed April 13-16, 2023, at Harrison High School Performing Arts Center, HHSPAC.org. Retirees were encouraged to attend the play and support this arts activity for the students and community. The timely play is a satire on government politics in general. In preparation for the play, the students researched the political history and campaign ads which was reflected in the performance.
Adair called the business session to order with prayer and the pledge of allegiance. Secretary Beverly Bear dispensed with reading the minutes thanking LeeAnn Johnson for them on BNCRTSS Facebook page and also Teri Smith and Jeff Dezort for excellent coverage in the Harrison Daily Times and the Newton County Times. Linda Mathis gave the treasurer’s report. There are currently 58 paid members.
Adair reported in the absence of Scholarship Chair Jane Adair. She is receiving applications for the Fall $500 North Arkansas College Scholarship for a student majoring in education. The bill has passed the Arkansas House and is going to the Senate. All ATRS retirees and all certified and non-certified educators are encouraged to contact their Senators regarding this bill.
Adair announced his retirement as BNCRTSS president encouraging all members to seriously consider becoming an officer of this valuable organization for the future of ARTA. Two birthdays were recognized and Spring pansies door prizes and a gift for Hamblin were presented.
Before adjournment, Adair announced the April 4, 2023, luncheon at Western Sizzlin’, Harrison, at 11:30 a.m. The popular speaker is Abby Burnett’s program “Most Unusual Tombstone Quotes”.
