The Jasper School District Board of Education granted several student trip requests at its March meeting. Some of the trips are rewards for students' performance on state-mandated tests.
Waynetta Villines, Jasper High School social studies teacher, made an appearance before the board to make the request on behalf of the Senior High History Club. The club wants to tour the USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park in Mobile, Ala. and visit nearby Gulf Shores.
Battleship USS Alabama (BB-60) saw service during World War II in the North Atlantic in 1943, then later that year, went to the South Pacific seas. The vessel earned nine Battle Stars for meritorious service. She ended up in Mobile, Alabama, as a National Historic Landmark and memorial.
The trip is scheduled for April 9-13.
