Our correspondents: As life goes by

When I was a little girl, I remember my mother’s love for reading. Everything had to already be done because once a book was started nothing else could get done! My sister-in-law, Toni, also made that same statement about my brother, Robert. Daddy enjoyed reading the newspaper each day, but I don’t remember him reading books. The four girls, Jackie, Patty, Jane and I, loved reading, as well. Saying all of this was to tell you about the latest books I have read. A friend in my book club shared a book, “The Lighthouse Keeper’s Daughter” by Hazel Gaynor that I have finished and found it to be so good. I could hardly put it down. Then I was on a reading binge and picked up “Memory Man” by David Baldacci. Oh my, I love the Baldacci books. He is such a good writer. I have been reading the Reader’s Digest Select Editions and this is the fifth book I have borrowed from Patty. There are four books in each edition.
I had two teeth pulled and surgery was done to be prepared for a post to be implanted. It was a perfect time to read. But I need to get some house cleaning done now before I start the next book.
On Friday, I spent all day at the State Track Meet in Rogers. My granddaughter, Mary Margaret Harris ran in her last high school event since she is a senior and headed to Missouri State next year on a cross country scholarship. She graduates on May 13, from Fayetteville High School. Mary Margaret and her brother, Colorado will both be in college next year. Their mother, Amanda, will be an empty nester.
My hummingbird feeders are being covered with little hummers drinking the feeders dry as quickly as possible. You would think birds that small would be silent, but they are noisy! It surprises me how vocal they are. The gold finches are coming to my feeders and they are beautiful. It is such a pleasure watching the birds feed. If I leave my feeders out at night, I can expect visitors gulping up all the seeds as quickly as they can. The three raccoons are huge! They climb up on the railing and just sit there shoveling the seeds to their mouths. I must admit they are beautiful animals, but they can eat a person out of house and home quickly.
Sunday, three of my four girls were able to share the day with me. As so often happens, Rachael had to work. Her days are long and quite often she works on holidays. Amanda’s two kids, Colorado and Mary Margaret worked so they couldn’t come over with her. Kara picked Amanda up so they came together from Springdale/Fayetteville. Elisa and Samantha live with me so they were already here. I started the day vomiting due to pain pills I had taken for my tooth pain. I was supposed to read at church, but couldn’t make it today. I hated to miss church on Mother’s Day but wasn’t sure I could make it. I don’t expect I will take pain pills again.
Monday night Samantha will be performing in her school’s band concert. She plays the violin. I think very well, but I haven’t heard any others play. Looking forward to the concert.
We still wear masks and social distance at the event. Hopefully, you are following CDC guidelines so we can beat this pandemic. Have a good week.
