During the December meeting of the Jasper School District Wellness Committee, Food Service Manager Tina Byrd announced some changes on the offerings served to school district students.
According to information coming out of the meeting, Byrd said she had requests for new items in the cafeteria that she has implemented with good results. Two such entrees are pizza sticks and mandarin orange chicken.
Byrd noted daily participation in the school district's meal program is up above 700, which was the target goal.
Menus are reviewed quarterly by a selctect group of individuals.
Tim Slape , Kim Mefford and Byrd attended a conference last summer on implementing Farm to School programs. Through the training, they were able to make the school district eligible to apply for larger Farm to School grants.
Byrd said she applied for a greenhouse grant, but did not receive funding for that at this time, but did receive funding for adding raised beds in Jasper, which the school's Vocational Agriculture Department will implement.
Byrd also shared and discussed the F2SI Action Planning document, outlining the schools plan for continued Farm to School initiatives. She shared the school district continues to use locally sourced beef and pork and plan to have lettuce in the spring from the school's raised beds.
The school district was able to provide 85 families with Thanksgiving meals through the Feeding One Another Grant, and planned to do ham dinners that week for families that signed up to participate.
