Kingston moves on to next round

GREERS FERRY — Sometimes a player picks the right time to shine.

Monday afternoon in the Class 1A State Basketball Tournament being held in Greers Ferry, Kingston turned a game around in 27 seconds. The Lady Yellow Jackets defeated Wonderview in overtime, 55-52.

With 42.6 seconds left in overtime, Wonderview nailed a free throw to take a 52-48 lead.

Trailing by two possessions, the Lady Yellow Jackets had to score and score quickly.

Senior Renee Pittman took it upon herself to take care of business. She launched a shot from the right wing and found the net. The 3-pointer pulled the Lady Yellow Jackets within a point.

Kingston used its last timeout after the shot with 25.4 seconds left.

The entire game the Lady Yellow Jackets used a fullcourt press against Wonderview. Then Kingston's press resulted in a walking call against the Lady Daredevils.

With the ball back, Pittman got the ball at the free throw line. She launched a shot and gave the Lady Yellow Jackets a lead.

Wonderview called its last timeout. The Lady Daredevils got the ball across the timeline and worked for a shot. The squad launched a shot that missed the mark.

Kingston had a hard time rebounding against a much taller Wonderview team, however, on this miss Pittman blocked out the 6-foot-2 Lady Daredevil post. Wonderview was called for the foul sending Pittman to the free throw line for two charity tosses.

She nailed both tosses so the best that Wonderview could do in the last 6.1 seconds was to tie the contest.

A last second shot sailed over the backboard to move the Lady Yellow Jackets to the next round of the state tournament.

Before the overtime excitement there was fourth quarter excitement.

Wonderview took its first lead of the game at 37-35 to start the fourth. Mellia Johnson hit a free throw to cut a point off the lead.

After the Lady Daredevils scored, Hannah Johnson hit a shot from the elbow and Mellia Johnson hit two free throw attempts to put Kingston back in front.

The Lady Daredevils scored the next two field goals to take a 43-40 lead midway through the fourth period.

Hannah Johnson hit two free throws for Kingston to pull her team within a point.

Neither team could score until the 43 second mark. Pittman hit a trey to give Kingston a two-point lead.

With 36 seconds left in the game, Wonderview went to the free throw line. The Lady Daredevil missed the free throw and the one that missed the shot got the rebound under the goal and scored to tie the contest at 45.

Kingston held the basketball for the last shot in regulation. The team missed the shot, but Wonderview lost the basketball out of bounds. Kingston called a timeout with 7.7 seconds left, but the team could not convert the play into points. Wonderview rebounded the miss and called a timeout with .3 seconds left. The team could not get a shot off.

The Lady Yellow Jackets started the game with a 7-0 lead. Two Hannah Johnson free throws led 14-9 at the end of the first period.

Two Hannah Johnson free throws set the halftime score at 25-22.

The game was tied at 27 and 33 in the third period. Two Hannah Johnson free throws were the last Kingston points in the third period that ended in a tie at 35.

Hannah Johnson led the team with 21 points. Pittman added 15, Mellia Johnson 12, Aliya Reynolds five and Libbie Johnson two.
