Gone, but not forgotten: The old Sheffield-Simpson Project circa 1928

Posted

The old Sheffield-Simpson Project was lengthened and extended through the national forest. When completed, it was regarded as a great forward step in road construction and in fact it was. It fully met the needs of the limited and slow rate of motor travel of that time. The high-power motor of today had not been developed. The average maximum speed of motor vehicles at that time being about 25 miles per hour, the high degree of curvature on many of the curves was not considered a serious hinderance or a menace to human life. The high-power, high-speed motors of the present time make driving around the steep curves and sharp turns more hazardous. The greatly increased traffic makes a wider road necessary. The original road has become a part of the state highway system, and it is now bing constructed, and is designated as State Highway No. 7. State hHighway crew grading at Freeman Springs is pictured here. Photo circa 1928.
