Extension Corner: April gardening tips

Posted

Cold weather crops are already in the garden, but now we start wanting to plant other crops in the garden. Remember that this is a good chance for a cold snap in April so be sure to wait till late April to early May to plant your other plants.
The following are steps that will help you prepare for the upcoming growing season. • Be prepared to protect your plants during an unexpected cold snap • Regularly look for pests on your plants • If you discover cold damage, clean it up • You can still plant cool seasons if you get on it in the next week or two • Plan out your warm season garden • Remember it is ok to wait for warmer weather before planting your tomatoes, eggplants, and peppers. • Plant okra, Peppers, Beans, Peas, and sweet potatoes after the first week of May or you risk a late frost killing them • You can start moving house plants back outdoors late this month to early May For more information about planting dates and other gardening questions please contact the Newton County Cooperative Extension Office at 870-446-2240.
