JASPER — The Jasper School District Board of Education met in special session late Tuesday afternoon. Promptly moving into executive session to discuss personnel, the board resumed the open meeting after only several minutes.
The first order of business was to accept the resignation of Superintendent Dr. Candra Brasel effective June 30. The board then named Assistant Superintendent Kim Liggett interim superintendent.
Dr. Brasel offered the Newton County Times a prepared statement following the meeting.
"After five incredible years serving as Superintendent of the Jasper School District, I want to share that I will be stepping down from my role effective June 30, 2025. I’ve accepted a position with the OUR Educational Cooperative, where I’ll be supporting and coaching administrators and overseeing mentoring programs — including continuing to work with leaders right here in our district.
This decision comes with a full heart. It is not due to any concerns with our schools or School Board — in fact, I am deeply grateful for their unwavering support and encouragement throughout my time here. This new opportunity is simply the right step forward for my family and my future.
"I’m proud to share that our Assistant Superintendent, Mrs. Liggett, has been named Interim Superintendent. Her deep knowledge of our district and strong leadership will ensure a seamless and successful transition.
"Though I’m stepping out of this role, I’m not going far — this is my home, and I plan to stay an active part of our wonderful community. Thank you for allowing me to be part of your students’ lives and for the trust and partnership we've shared. It has truly been an honor."
