Conference championships are ...?

Posted

I went to a high school that only recognizes one thing, a state title.
That is great. You made it the state championship game. We are so proud of you.
We will put your state runner-up trophy somewhere along the ledge of trophies running along the wall by the ceiling. It could be by a junior high invitational trophy from 1997.
The purpose of playing is winning. Being second is losing.
In high school, there is joy to winning a conference title, but is there in the SEC?
Don't get me wrong, I would like to find out. I would love to own a football title or win another basketball championship. Maybe even own a baseball or softball championship.
But are these championships really important?
Much is being made of the Arkansas Razorback baseball team. They were ranked No. 1. They hit their traditional mid-season slide.
Now, they are in a huge fight to finish second in the conference standings heading into the SEC Tournament.
The talking heads are always downplaying the tournament. Saying things like, we need to get a win and then we can rest before the NCAA Tournament opens.
That will give us a Regional and Super Regional.
I bleed Razorback red, but the last few years, I have been left without a championship of any type.
No College World Series. No SEC title. Nothing. Nada. Zilch.
So, back to my question. Is a conference championship worth it?
Where do we put value on a season?
What if the Hogs lose in their Regional again this year?
How are they remembered? They are obviously a good baseball team, but what did they accomplish?
The SEC Tournament is starting next week. My thoughts are, let's win it.
We can at least say we have a trophy of some sort.
