I had mentioned the old brush arbor at Crossroads a few weeks back. Our cousin Willard Villines actually built the brush arbor with some help from a few folks. A few years later, a tabernacle was built in its place. I understand a larger tabernacle has been constructed since then. It has been many years since I was at Crossroads.
Willard Villines has been making molasses the old-fashioned way. I remember his dad, Arie Villines and my great-grandpa “Little Bob” Villines making molasses when I was growing up. In her book, These Hills, My Home: A Buffalo River Story, Billie Touchstone Hardaway describes how important molasses making was to the old Villines settlers and their descendants on the Buffalo River. It is a very interesting piece of history. Clay Newcomb recently made a video about the process and interviewed Willard on more than one occasion. You can find him on social media.
The Hilltop Community Building committee has been having fundraisers throughout the past year to make some much needed repairs to the Community Building. They have a fundraiser coming up on
October 12. This will be the second annual Chili Cook-Off. The cook-off starts at 5 p.m. Prepare your favorite chili dish and join the festivities. If you would rather just eat and cast your vote, bring a favorite side dish and help pick a winner. The Hilltop community appreciates your support.
The Compton Community Building committee is still selling raffle tickets for the quilt that was pieced by Erma Christian. For more information, call Darlene Cullen, Paulette Jech, or Jeri Holder. The Compton Community Association appreciates your support as well.
The Compton Volunteer Fire Department will be hosting a fall chili supper in late October. More information will be available next week. Hope to see you all there.
